Fund raising Quiz night at the Sprig and Fern – Thank You!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported us at our recent funding raising quiz night at the Sprig and Fern, Māpua, especially quiz master Lola, the Sprig and Fern staff, the volunteers and of course everyone who participated in the quiz. We raised just over $800 dollars, with all funds going towards running the community library.
Our next quiz night is 27th July. Save the date for another evening of fun and fund raising.

Successful Summer Book Fair

We regulary rotate our catalgue and to make room for  new books, we sell  no longer required books at our fairs. This year our holiday book fair was held on January the 3rd 2022. It was a beautiful summer's day with many holiday makers around and the fair raised $780. All funds go towards purchasing new books for the library. A huge thank you to the volunteers who organised the event and helped on the day.
Christmas Raffle 2021
Another successful Christmas raffle was held the week before Christmas. The prizes were two food hampers and a spectacular Christmas cake. We raised $1100 and all funds go towards purchasing new books for the library.
A huge thank you to all off the local community who supported the library raffle. The two hampers were won by Mapua locals, and the Christmas cake was won by someone from Takaka. Again it couldn't have happened without the volunteers - thank you.
EXHIBITION: JENNY FERRIER
Jenny Ferrier resides in Ruby Bay and her favourite medium is watercolours.
"Jenny finds her inspiration from the natural world - especially birds, the bush, sea and coastline. When out of her studio she is observing the outdoors - sketching, colour studies and photography. She sees art as a story, a time and place visited. Jenny's goal is to share her emoitive reaction to a subject and inspire the viewer".

This exhibiiton is on until the 10th June.

January 2022 Exhibition
Grant Palliser – Exhibition 6 January to 17 February
Grant is perhaps best known for his long art teaching career and his numerous public statues around Nelson Tasman region including the Seafarers Memorial on Sunderland Pier;  “Oracle” the bronze hand outside the Stoke library, and the water fountain in Sundial Square in Richmond.
Grant moved to Mapua Village in 2020 from Westdale Road - where he and his partner Esme established a bronze casting studio and foundry.  Whilst predominantly an abstract  impressionist, Grant frequently references landscape and environment issues in his works.

Below are two examples of Grant's work currently on show in the library.

My Beautiful Island from England to New Zealand via Hong Kong and a war.
Christopher Potter
The Māpua community library welcomed Chris Potter on Thursday 10th June to what was a very well attended event, to learn about the discovery of his mother’s diaries in 1996. These along with his own memories and extensive research led him to write his mother’s remarkable story.
Chris gave the audience a taster of some of his mother’s story through photographs and his own memories; the good times as a young woman in Hong Kong (the beautiful island in the title) where she meet Chris’ father and the harrowing events after the invasion of Hong Kong in 1941.
Chris gave a candid and at times moving overview of this remarkable woman which was well received and prompted many questions.
Chris will be a guest speaker at the Māpua community library literary festival in September for those of you that missed out and would like to hear first hand this remarkable story.
How to purchase tickets for Chris’ session on the 26th September and for more details on the Māpua community library literary festival, click on the dedicated page above.
